Irish National Stud + Gardens

Monday, 10 July 2017
Last summer I went on a family holiday in the Republic of Ireland and we visited the Irish National Stud in Tully, Co. Kildare.  I had an amazing time there and it was probably the best day of the whole trip. Just a quick disclaimer before I start; any of the information that I've included in this post has been sourced from the Irish National Stud website which I have linked here.

Irish National Stud

The Stud

1900 | The farm in Tully was purchased from the Fay family by Colonel William Hall Walker, who became the most successful breeder of the time.

1915 | The farm was gifted to the Crown and became The National Stud under Sir Henry Greer's leadership. From this time, the farm continued its success as it produced winners of all 5 Classics.

1943 | The Irish Government took over the property and took over the running of the Stud in August of 1946.

Japanese Gardens

1906 - 1910 | The gardens were created by Japanese horticulturist Tassa Eida and his son Minoru. Their aim of the garden was to use the contents to symbolise the 'Life of Man'.

The gardens are similar to those of the early 20th century and they portray the human experience as it continues down different paths (quite literally). Stages include birth, childhood, marriage, parenthood, old age, death and the afterlife.

This garden was designed by landscape architect Professor Martin Hallinan in 1999 in commemoration of St Fiachra, the patron saint of gardeners.

This gardens seeks to capture that which inspired those involved in Ireland's monastic movement in the 6th and 7th centuries, by paying tribute to the raw Irish landscape through rock and water.
